Reasons you may want to book a lactation visit.

  • You’ve seen things on the internet or heard from a friend that their baby had a tie and what issues it caused and now you’re wondering if that’s true for your baby. We can do a full functional assessment to tell you!

  • Your baby has a hard time doing what they need to do to be a great feeder, let us guide you in how to teach your baby the skills they need.

  • Clogs and mastitis are not fun! We give you the tools your need to prevent them from happening and clear anything you are currently dealing with.

  • Whether you want a date night, a break from nursing in the evening, or returning to work you likely want your baby to take a bottle. Bottle feeding skills are another part of what we do

  • No pain is normal. If you are experiencing pain, we can help!

  • If you have an infant who is struggling to gain weight, you know how stressful that is. Poor weight gain is one of Sarah’s favorite feeding issues to address as solving it brings so much relief for baby and the entire family.

  • This is a time to be enjoying your baby, loving on them, and soaking them in. We want you to experience that joy and not be overwhelmed by feeding your baby.

  • Whether you have concerns about low supply or oversupply, we can help!

  • With so many pumps, flanges, and all the different pump settings it can be hard to figure out the right way to pump. How and when to pump depend on your goals and your individual situation. Let us take the guess work out.

  • Day 4 or year 4. Whenever you want to be done, for whatever reason we can support you to make the transition as smooth as possible.

  • I (Sarah) will just say it, “colic” is bullshit. We can help you get to the root of why your baby is not a happy baby.

  • Do babies have reflux? Sure. But it’s fixable. And that doesn’t mean with medications. There’s a root cause, we can help identify that!

  • Maybe you’ve worked with other professionals but still find yourself struggling. We find this true of many of our families. We often hear how they wish they have come to Oaks sooner.

  • Whether you are a first time mom or veteran mom, you know your baby best. If you have concerns about your baby’s moods or feedings but don’t feel like anyone is listening, come see us!

  • There is a tongue tie or there is not. If you have concerns about ties but have been told “its slight”, “just a small tongue tie”, or “it won’t cause issues”. We can truly help you determine whether your baby has impaired feeding skills due to a tie.

  • Cluster feeding for a few hours (especially in the beginning and in the evening) is normal. But “cluster feeding” all day long is not normal. If you feel like feedings never end, we can help!

I have a question but don’t want a visit. Can I just text or call you and ask my question?

No, sorry! Without a signed consent and full health history, we cannot provide individualized care.

What is a lactation visit like?

We listen to your story and how breastfeeding is going for you so far. We ask questions and gather a full health history on you and your baby. We perform a functional assessment which consists of holding your baby and feeling the inside of their mouth to assess for any oral function or structural concerns and feel the quality of their suck.

We observe a feeding and assist in positioning as needed. We listen to your concerns and answer your questions.

We may also have you pump during our visit to ensure you are using to correct size flanges, suctioning power, and methods.

We weigh your baby on specialized scale, possibly including before and after a feeding to see how much milk your baby is transferring.

We listen to how you are adjusting to life changes.

We end the visit by creating a care plan specific to you and your baby’s needs and figure out what is going to work best for you both.

Do you think all babies have a tongue tie?

We do NOT think all babies have a tongue tie. Do we see a lot of babies with tongue ties? Yes. If you think about it, those seeking our services are those who are struggling. The families we are serving are having breastfeeding challenges, therefore, we do see a lot of tongue ties. Kind of like asking if an orthopedic doctor sees a lot of broken bones, of course they do, but not everyone is breaking bones.

Can you help me stop breastfeeding?

Absolutely! There are a multitude of reasons a breastfeeding relationship needs to come to an end. A relationship is a two way street, if it isn’t working for both mom and baby, it’s not working. Sometimes mom needs a medication that is not compatible with breastfeeding (although most are). Sometimes at two years old, mom is just done and wants to wean. But sometimes, the relationship just isn’t the best fit for a family. We tell all our families, your mental health comes first. If breastfeeding is creating so much stress you are not able to bond with your baby and create happy memories, it might be time to make a change. While we will do absolutely everything in our power to help you accomplish your feeding goals, we understand if you want to stop breastfeeding. We are not here to judge your decisions, we are here to support you no matter what you choose.

What do I need to do before a visit?

Complete all intake forms. Create a list of questions for me. Bring along your pump, pump flanges, bottles, and pumped milk/donor milk/formula if applicable. It is helpful if you keep a long of all feedings at the breast, by bottle, pump sessions, and diaper output for the 24-48 hours prior to our visit.

You will fix all my breastfeeding issues, won’t you?

We would love to say YES! While we do hope to make some quick changes for you, there are many factors at play when we are dealing with breastfeeding problems. We do hope that you see improvements in your issues within about 48 hours when following the care plan we create together.

You want things to be easier. You want confidence. You want answers.

We got you!
